Why Equatorial Guinea Suspended Its Star Player At AFCON 2023

Emilio Nsue, the top scorer at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, has been suspended indefinitely by his country’s football authority.

According to the Equatorial Guinean Football Federation (Feguifut), the striker was allegedly involved in “several episodes of serious indiscipline” during the AFCON 2023.

Nsue, 34, finished as the highest scorer at the finals, scoring five goals in four games as Equatorial Guinea were eliminated in the round of 16. He was in Abidjan on Sunday to get the golden boot award following Ivory Coast’s triumph over Nigeria in the final.

Nsue, however, is not the only player to have faced the wrath of the national football governing body. Another player, Iban Salvador, has also been suspended. The 28-year-old National Thunder midfielder was involved in a “unpleasant incident” in Abidjan on January 29, the day after the team was eliminated from the tournament, according to Feguifut.

Equatorial Guinea, after a good group stage performance, left Afcon 2023 with a 1-0 loss to Guinea.
