Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo has fired his finance minister in a dramatic cabinet change ahead of the December elections.
According to President Nana Akufo-Addo’s office, Ofori-Atta will be replaced by Mohammed Amin Adam, who is presently the minister of state for finance and was formerly the deputy energy minister in charge of the petroleum industry.
Ken Ofori-Atta oversaw Ghana’s debt restructuring operations after the West African country defaulted on the majority of its external debt in December 2022.
That year, inflation soared above 50%, and the native cedi currency fell sharply. Ofori-Atta was called to resign by street protestors as well as opposition and ruling party MPs, but he persevered.
No cause has been revealed for his dismissal, which has affected 12 other ministers of state. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the information minister, was assigned to the housing ministry. He was replaced by his deputy, Fatimatu Abubakar, while Ambrose Dery, who held the interior minister post, was sent to the president’s office.
President Nana Akufo-Addo’s second and final term in office will finish in 2025.
