Somalia Least Likely To Punish Media Murders

A prominent media watchdog says Somalia topped the list of countries where the killing of journalists is most likely to go unpunished for the second year in a row.

The Committee to Protect Journalists says in a report issued on Thursday that al-Shabaab militants were responsible for the majority of media killings in Somalia.

In Iraq and Syria, the countries that ranked second and third for impunity in media killings, the Islāmic State group was responsible for most of the deaths.

Elisabeth Witchel, a CPJ consultant and the report’s author, says killing journalists with impunity emboldens would-be killers and forces the media to run in a climate of fear that further restricts the flow of information to the public.
