There are indications that President Muhammadu Buhari may have ordered the massive transfer of officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force in Niger Delta, Vanguard reports.
The order is said to be a result of the inability of the officers to contain the bombing activities of Niger Delta Avengers and other militant groups on oil and gas facilities in the region.
It was alleged that some of the high ranking officers have compromised after the discovery that several billions of naira were distributed through a serving Major General in the Nigerian Army, who commanded a Joint Task Force in the area.
News24 previously reported that the frequent bombings of oil installations in Niger Delta has had a crippling effect on Nigeria’s oil sector, forcing the FG to seek to open a dialogue with the militants in the hope of eradicating the attacks.
The Niger Delta Avengers’ demands have been called unreasonable by renowned Constitutional lawyer, Itse Sagay who has questioned the Federal Government’s decision to negotiate with the militants.
President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision however has come under criticism, with commentators believing his administration would be negotiating from a point of weakness.
Sagay has stood behind this criticism, saying that the demands made were highly unreasonable because usually a party entering into negotiations comes up with demands that can be met.
He called the demand that the Federal Government stop lifting of crude oil as absurd because petroleum is the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy.
