Leaders in Murang’a County have kicked off a 12-day Identification Card registration campaign targeting to more than 16,000 eligible persons in the area.
The exercise will be led by elected leaders and government administrators including the County Commissioner, Kula Hache.
Hache said they will target areas with high population of unregistered voters adding that they aim at increasing the number of adults with ID cards which currently stands at 30 percent of the County’s population.
She stated that since 2013, there has been a downward trend in the uptake of identity cards which has affected social and economic development in the area.
The process comes two months after the electoral commission conducted a massive registration of voters that was characterized by very low turnout, largely attributed to lack of ID cards.
She said the government will also provide vehicles that will be used to announce the ongoing exercise in the villages.
Hache said she will tour all quarries and give workers gloves that they can wear for two weeks for their fingertips to heal.
She asked the chiefs not to demand many documents from potential candidates, but ask for only birth certificates.
