The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion has called on the government to allow secondary students to own phones in Schools.
Speaking in Bomet, Sossion said that such a move will aid in the digitisation of the education sector in the country as students will be able to increase their knowledge by accessing various educational links.
“Phones are like computers and students should own them in school to widen their scope of knowledge. Students need to be digital in this information age”, he said.
Sossion called on Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to immediately issue a circular to lift the ban of phones in schools.
“We are talking about revolutionising the ICT sector in the country but we cannot allow our youth to own phones. That is ridiculous”, he said.
Sossion’s demand is likely to stir controversy within the education sector in the coming weeks.
