Due to heavy flooding, over 4,000 inhabitants in Ghana’s southeastern area have been forced to flee their homes.
The flooding of the Akosombo Dam caused this disaster, culminating in the severe devastation of homes and farmlands along the Volta River’s banks.
The flood has caused a disruption in basic services, with some regions without access to water or electricity. According to local media, the Ghanaian government stated in an official statement on Friday that thousands of people had been displaced as a direct result of the floods in at least nine regions.
The United Nations-affiliated Global incident and Coordination System recorded seven injuries as a result of the incident.
The Volta River Authority had issued recommendations asking inhabitants to migrate to higher land prior to the inundation. This advice was made in reaction to rising water levels upstream of the Akosombo Dam, which were caused mostly by excessive rainfall in the region.
