Ghana Hit By Major Power Outage Due To Lack Of Gas

Most of Ghana has gone dark due to a scarcity of gas to operate the machinery required to generate energy in the country.

Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), a power distribution corporation in Ghana, said in a statement on Friday, October 27 that the situation has produced “a supply gap of 550MW at peak time” at the Tema power plant, near the capital, Accra.

Ghana is experiencing its greatest economic crisis in a generation, and the power outage began on Thursday evening.

According to a June report, the country’s present energy supply is “critically unhealthy and teetering on the brink of a power crisis.”

According to the Centre for Socioeconomic Studies (CSS) report, the country’s financial difficulties has aggravated the country’s power position, which could worsen in the coming years.

In July, the country’s independent power producers threatened to shut down operations due to debts owing to them by the state-run Electricity Company of Ghana.

The power operator, GRIDCo, said in a statement on Thursday that energy supply to users in some parts of Ghana would be reduced due to “limited gas supply” to the Tema power plant.

“The inconvenience caused is deeply regretted,” the statement added.

The power utility company did not provide a timeframe for the outages or an estimate of how long it would take for normal supplies to be restored.

The West African country derives the majority of its electricity from hydro and thermal sources, which are frequently neglected.
