Two men have been sentenced to death by a Kerugoya court after they were found guilty of violently stealing a mobile phone from a student.
Moses Muriithi, 28 and John Kinyua, 30, were handed the punishment by magistrate Juliet Kasam.
It is alleged that the two robbed Jackson Miano, a Form Two student, of his phone worth KES 1 000 and injured him on May 9, 2015 at Karia Village, Kirinyaga County.
The court heard that, Miano and his brother were walking home from the nearby market at around 11pm when they were accosted by the accused persons who were armed with pangas and rungus.
Kasam said the two brothers were attacked and wounded and one of the accused persons snatched a mobile phone from the student.
The court heard that the accused persons escaped but the student reported the matter to the local police station and recorded a statement.
The accused persons were later arrested by the police and charged with the offence.
Police also recovered the stolen phone which was used as an exhibit in court.
However, in mitigation the accused persons said they were orphans and were remorseful of what happened.
The court said nothing could be done as the law provided for a mandatory death sentence for such an offence.
