The Taiwanese government has complained after eight of its citizens were forcibly flown to China following their acquittal on fraud charges in Kenya.
It accused the Chinese authorities of “uncivilised behaviour” that amounted to abduction.
The eight were among 23 Taiwanese nationals who were cleared of being part of a telephone fraud ring that also included Chinese citizens.
Taipei says that when they went to retrieve their passports from Kenyan police, they were detained and put on a plane by Chinese officials.
Relations between Taiwan and China are entering a rocky period ahead of the inauguration of Taiwan’s pro-independence president, Tsai Ing-wen.
China sees the island as a breakaway province, which it has threatened to take back by force if necessary.
