British Man, Russ Cook, Running Length of Africa Nears Finish Line

A man from the United Kingdom who has been jogging the length of Africa for charity set off from the Tunisian city of Bizerte on Sunday, hoping to complete the final stage of his long adventure.

Russ Cook, also known as the “Hardest Geezer,” began the challenge in April of last year, commencing in Cape Agulhas in South Africa, the continent’s southernmost point.

He crossed into Tunisia on Thursday night and plans to finish the epic journey by Sunday, terminating at the continent’s northernmost point, Cape Angela.

On Sunday, supporters raced alongside the 26-year-old as he began the final leg of his more than 16,000-kilometer adventure.

Cook is running to benefit two charities: The Running Charity, which helps young people with complex needs or who are homeless, and Sandblast, which works to increase awareness and support for Western Sahara’s indigenous Saharawis.

He has recently seen a rise in donations, raising more than £650,000 ($808,832) toward his £1 million target.
