Sound of crash was like an explosion – witness

Cape Town – The sound of a vehicle crashing into a building in Claremont in the early hours of Friday morning was like an explosion, a woman living close to the accident scene told News24.

The accident happened at around 04:00 just a few metres from a nightclub.

“The noise was deafening and I raced to my window thinking a bomb or some kind of explosion had gone off,” said Camri Schoultz.

The vehicle had crashed into the side of a furniture shop.

Paramedics who responded to the scene said the woman behind the wheel was in her 30s. She was travelling alone.

While it was unclear where the woman was coming from, people who had come out from a club close to the scene ran to the car, screaming her name.

One of the club goers, a male, attempted to get her out of the car.

“The other guy started shouting at his friend, telling him not to move her and telling the recently gathered crowd to back off,” said Schoultz.

She said the police arrived a short while later and dispersed the crowd.

“I think she was dead by the time the first police car arrived,” said Schoultz.

She said the men who had earlier run to the car began crying while the police cordoned off the scene.

Paramedics used the jaws of life to remove the woman from the wreck.

“The medics did a quick examination and then covered her with a white sheet. This is when I knew for sure that she was dead,” said Schoultz.

The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.
