Interior CS, Joseph Nkaissery has backtracked on his earlier threat of arresting CORD leaders if they defy an order of not convening at Uhuru Park during Madaraka Day on Wednesday.
Nkaissery at a press conference in Nairobi Tuesday said CORD Chief Raila Odinga and others are free to hold the rally in Nairobi .
This was a few hours after a High Court Judge, Justice George Odunga issued a ruling that okayed the rally at Uhuru Park and directed police boss Joseph Boinnet to provide security to those who will attend the event.
“We are a law-abiding government. Cord will have the opportunity to celebrate at Uhuru park. I have no problem with that,” said the CS.
“CORD supporters are Kenyan citizens and they are entitled to security like any other citizens. We have given instructions that they be provided with security, so long as they hold a celebration and not a demonstration,” he added.
