Nigerian Police Detain Naira Marley Amid Probe Into Mohbad’s Death

According to police in Lagos, Naira Marley has been arrested as part of an inquiry into Mohbad’s death.

Mohbad, 27, was born Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba and died on September 12. He was laid to rest the next day.

The circumstances surrounding his death have continued to spark debate on social media, with many music fans condemning Marley.

In October 2022, Mohbad claimed he was assaulted by Marley, the head honcho of his previous label, Marlian Records. He also asked his fans to hold Marley accountable if anything bad happened to him.

Since Mohbad’s death, hundreds of Nigerians have demanded that Marlian Records be banned, and nationwide protests have been conducted to demand justice for the singer.

On September 18, the Lagos Police Department established a 13-member special investigative team to look into Mohbad’s death.

On Tuesday, the Lagos police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed Marley’s detention for questioning via X, formerly Twitter.

“Azeez Fashola aka Naira Marley has been taken into custody for interrogation and other investigation activities,” the statement reads.

The authorities exhumed Mohbad’s body for an autopsy on September 21 and are awaiting the results.

Marley first mentioned Mohbad’s death on September 15. The record label president lamented his former signee’s death while called for an investigation into his death.

On September 26, the ‘Soapy’ hitmaker issued another statement in response to a police investigation invitation.

He said he has been “out of the country since August 31, 2023”.

The artist further stated that he would comply with the police invitation and completely help with the inquiry.

Marley further stated that “I had no involvement in Mohbad’s death” and “certainly have no reason to be a fugitive.”

Naira Marley also said Mohbad suffered from mental illness prior to his death.

He claimed he attempted to get help for Mohbad after learning of the late singer’s “mental health issues” from a friend.

The Lagos state judiciary has launched an inquest to determine the reason of Mohbad’s death.
