NIGERIA: Qualifying For AAG, Olympics Is Our Utmost Aim

Nigeria Rugby players to the All Africa Games

The Nigeria Rugby players to the All Africa Games and pre-Olympic qualifiers on Thursday promised not to disappoint the country.

The qualifiers are scheduled for June 6 in Lome, Togo. Nigeria’s contingent would depart the country on June 5.

Some of the players told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in interviews that they would do their best, saying that qualifying for the All Africa Games (AAG) and the Olympics was their utmost aim.

Azeez Ladipo of Cowrie RFC and Captain of the Black Stallions, said the only country that could serve as a threat was Morocco, boasting that his team would give a good fight.

“The pool B that we are in is fairly good, the only country that might give us a good fight is Morocco but with determination, I know we will excel,” he said.

Hafis Ayinla, a Cowrie RFC player, said that the players knew what was at stake.

“So they will give in their best to ensure the country qualified without underestimating any team.

“We have been training and we are good to go. We will put all what we have been taught by our coach into practise.

“We will not disappoint our fans and the country,” he said.

Mshelia Danjuma of Richmond RFC, UK, also assured that he would not disappoint the country, saying his coming was not for him to lose the qualifiers.

“We are ready for the competition and I also pray for luck to be on our side. But aside that, we will not disappoint the nation,” he said.

Christian Ogar, also a Cowrie RFC player, said that they would not underestimate any team, adding that “qualifying for the Olympics will put Nigeria in the limelight.’’

“If we qualify and go to the Olympics, it will better showcase us to the world as a rugby loving nation. We will definitely not look down on any team,” he stressed. (NAN)
