NDLEA Laments Increase In Illicit Drug Use In IDP Camps

The Nigeria Drug and Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has expressed concern over illicit drug use in IDP camps following the arrest of a drug peddler in Dikwa, Borno State.

According to a Premium Times report, Baba Haruna (48) was apprehended while attempting to sell drugs, including cocaine, to addicts within a camp for internally displaced people (IDPs) as well as those in the host community of Maiduguri.

Ona Ogilegwu, NDLEA commandant, disclosed that in addition to the arrest, Haruna was also being investigated on allegations that he was also a supplier of hard drugs to members of Boko Haram before his relocation to the camp in Maiduguri two years ago.

Haruna is also accused of impersonating NDLEA officials, with Ogilegwu reporting that he had prevented members of the camp from reporting him due to posing as an NDLEA officer.

“The criminal disguised himself as an officer of NDLEA in the IDPs camp to sell illicit drugs,” Ogilegwu tate.

The anti-drug organisation has also confirmed the arrest of a 32-year-old man in possession of hard drugs within the camp.

“I don’t know what is wrong with these people, but I will tell you that the level of drug intake among men and women in IDPs camps is more than you can imagine,” Ogilegwu stated.
