Brussels – Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed the United States’ decision to maintain its current troop level in Afghanistan, calling it an “important factor” as the alliance considers its future role in the country.

“This important decision paves the way for a sustained presence by Nato allies and partners in Afghanistan,” Stoltenberg said in a Thursday statement, adding that the alliance would take “key decisions” about the scope of its Afghan mission in the coming weeks.

“The Afghan security forces continue to carry out their security responsibilities across the country, in a very challenging security environment. So it’s crucial that we continue to support them … to preserve the gains we have achieved,” the Nato chief said.
