The NARC party led by former Lands Cabinet Secretary, Charity Ngilu has pulled out of the formation of Jubilee Party, it has emerged.
President Uhuru Kenyatta’s The National Alliance (TNA) party director, Joseph Mathai has said NARC withdrew over unknown reasons but merger of other parties that form Jubilee coalition is on course.
Mathai said the parties will merge into one political party which the President and his Deputy William Ruto will use to seek re-election in 2017.
Speaking during an interview with a vernacular TV station, Mathai said 10 political parties including TNA, URP, GNU, UDF, Ford People, New Ford Kenya, APK, Republican Party, CCU and JAP have endorsed the merger.
He said the new political vehicle will be launched at Kasarani stadium, Nairobi.
“We had a meeting in Karen and even PNU joined us. We want to have a major political party devoid of tribalism and one that will accommodate all people. In developed countries, they do not have tens of political parties like here,” said Mathai.
He observed that political parties should compete on ideologies.
He added that constitutions of the member parties have been studied by a special legal committee with a view of coming up with a single constitution, noting that the team is also studying constitutions of popular political parties around the world.
“We will devolve the leadership of the Jubilee Party to the counties. We are also promising fair nominations during the party primaries guided by law because that is the major fear,” he explained.
Mathai added that the launch of the new party is awaiting debate and passing of the Political Parties Amendment Bill at the Senate.
