Kenyans have been angered by former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annam’s attack of the Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC) for freeing President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy, William Ruto.
Kenyatta and Ruto were among six Kenyans who were implicated with crimes against humanity at the court following the disputed 2007 elections. About 1,200 died and scores others displaced in the violence.
ICC dropped the charges against Kenyatta in December 2014, several months after taking office as Kenya’s fourth President.
William Ruto charges were withdrawn in April 2016, amid claims that the two Principals interfered with witnesses thus making their cases very hard to deal with.
All the other Kenyans implicated in the violence were also let off the hook.
Speaking for the first time since the collapse of the cases, Koffi Annan told Financial Times that the President and his Deputy used state resources at their disposal to fight for their freedom, and faulted the ICC for letting them free.
In response to Annan’s remarks, leaders allied to the Jubilee government have blasted the former UN Secretary General saying he wanted the two barred from running in the 2013 Presidential elections.
Aden Duale who is the Majority Leader in National assembly further said Annan was bitter because his project the two principals failed, Standard reports.
Kenyans on social media were however divided over the issue, with some congratulating him for his exemplary leadership skills and others accusing him of working hard to see the President locked up in ICC.
