Leaders and residents of Kisumu County on Wednesday boycotted Madaraka Day celebrations and instead chose to attend the CORD rally at Uhuru Park.
The event was scheduled to take place at Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground but majority of the County officials and local residents did not attend.
County Commissioner, John Elungata had to read the President’s speech to an empty stadium.
The Star reports that even the Governor, Jack Ranguma was missing.
Previous reports had revealed plans to boycott the celebrations by regional leaders, including governors Okoth Obado (Migori), Cornel Rasanga (Siaya) and Cyprian Awiti (Homa Bay).
Elungata however assured those who attended that all was in order as the leaders had sent their apologies.
