Kenyans now have a chance to rank the performance of their County chiefs following the launch of the The Governor’s Awards 2015.
The official launch of the awards took place yesterday at a Nairobi hotel, with a call for submissions of entries from the country’s 47 governors, where each of them is supposed to submit a self-assessment report.
Speaking during the a launch, Nahum Okwiya the Managing Director of Cosmopolitan Media Ltd, the publishers of The Governor’s Magazine who are the main sponsors of the award’s, said the County bosses will be ranked on performance.
“The Governor’s Awards is merit based and is centered on County governors innovative and sustainable strategies that have greatest socio-economic impact in their respective counties,” he said.
“Our main objective is to highlight the achievements of the governor’s mid-term during their tenure in office and recognize exemplary performance,” he added.
Okwiya explained that the governors will be profiled and recognized based on 25 categories, the key among them being Health services delivery, Education, Road Network Development and agriculture and Food security, among others.
According to Okwiya, other categories that will determine who the top governor will be are; Environmental Conservation, Transformative leadership and media, public relations and Access to information.
“Submission for the self-assessment entries, which will be done online, is now open to the governors. Deadline for submission of the entries is September 30, 2015,” he said and added that members of the public will have an opportunity to view the self-assessment reports and comment on the entries highlighting the governor’s achievements.
Pete Ondeng, the chairman of the awards said the process to determine the overall best Governor will be conducted by a team of independent judges from various professional, academic, regulatory and memberships institutions among others.
“The judgment process will be an independent undertaking. Scientific methods will be used to assess and award initiatives by Governors who have demonstrated the greatest impacts under the 25 categories we have in place,” said Ondeng.
According to Ondeng, a gala dinner will be held in Mombasa County on October 30 to award the best County chief who would have emerged tops.
Royal media services is a media partner of the awards, while corporate sponsors of the fete include Orange, Amaco Insurance, Jambo Pay, Amiran Kenya, Toyata Kenya and G North and North Sons among others.
Other partners include the Institute of Certifies Accountants of Kenya( ICPAK) and the Kenya Diaspora Alliance(KDA) and the Civil Society.
