Nyeri – The Catholic Church has unveiled a KES 3 million shrine at Our Lady of Providence Gikondi Church in Mukurweini, Nyeri in honour of Blessed Sister Irene Nyaatha.
The shrine, complete with a chapel and preserving the original Nyaatha’s house where she died in1930, was unveiled by Nyeri Catholic Archbishop Peter Kairu after a mass service.
Kairu said the monument is the first of its kind in Africa and will serve as a reminder to Christians that they should always strive to embrace acts of mercy just like Nyaatha.
He stated that the shrine will also be a major tourist attraction for Christians from all over the world and urged the government to utilize it for the benefit of all Kenyans.
Father Peter Githinji, who coordinated beatification of Blessed Sister Irene Nyaatha last year, said the shrine will give Christians an opportunity to interact with a mortal who is close to the maker and who can intercede on their behalf.
