The Nation Media Group on Thursday made a major mistake in one of the articles published in the Daily Nation newspaper.
In an article on the Sh791 Million scandal at the National Youth Service (NYS), the local daily used the picture of Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) CEO Halakhe Waqo identifying him as the NYS Ex-directorAdan Harakhe – a man linked to the infamous saga.
The publication was made after Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) director Ndegwa Muhoro appeared before the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and disclosed that Mr Harakhe had lied about his password being stolen, something that allegedly facilitated the NYS loot.
“If the password was stolen, it could only happen at the user’s level and not through hacking of the IFMIS system,” Ndegwa said.
Mr Ndegwa noted that there was no evidence that Harakhe’s password had been stolen.
At the same time, head of the cybercrime unit at the DCI, Simon Kipruto indicated: “From his browser history, we were able to tell that it is Mr Harakhe who approved the payments. It was an afterthought to say that the password was stolen since the IFMIS system is solidly secure.”
Last week, Harakhe shocked PAC during a grilling session where it came to light that he was still receiving a full salary despite having been suspended in September 2015 over corruption at the Service.
He reiterated that the fraudulent payments had been made through his account, which had been hacked.
