Ghanaian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. William Azumah Awinador-Kanyirigi has called for a rebirth of the historical ties and bilateral relationship between Ghana and Nigeria saying relationship between the two is a crucial one for the region.
Speaking during Ghanaian 58th independent anniversary in Abuja, the envoy said that there is a lot going on between the two countries, the roots which can be traced to centuries during the trans-Sahara trade.
According to him, Nigeria and Ghana are the largest and second-largest economies in West Africa, respectively and are also the two biggest oil producers in the region.
“Nigeria was Ghana’s third-most-important trade partner in 2010, accounting for almost 10 per cent of total Ghanaian foreign trade and Ghana, in turn, was Nigeria’s ninth-largest trade partner in that same year, accounting for some 1.3 per cent of Nigerian trade.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Danjuma Sheni said that Ghana’s attainment of Independence in 1957 was epochal to the extent that it opened the floodgates of the freedom agenda that was followed in quick succession by the independence of other African countries.
He however noted that Nigeria and Ghana have come a long way saying “our shared history, aspirations focus on most of the bilateral and sub-regional and continental and global interest have provided a solid foundation on which our leaders have over the years, built a strong bond of friendship, solidarity and partnership.”
