A section of elders from the Kalenjin community have asked journalist Joshua Sang to shelf his political ambitions.
Sang, whose case at the International Criminal Court (ICC) was terminated on Tuesday, had announced that he will vie for the Trans-Nzoia County Senator’s seat in the coming 2017 general elections.
ICC judges Chile Eboe-Osuji and Robert Fremr declared the crimes against humanity cases against Deputy President William Ruto and Sang a ‘mistrial’, setting them free in the case that has dragged for over six years.
Elders from the Nandi tribe which falls under the larger Kalenjin community led by Vincent Rono on Thursday told journalists that Sang should change his mind as his decision will sabotage the community’s political mathematics.
“We have steeled on former Minister Kioruto Arap Kirwa as a community to succeed the incumbent Senator Henry Ndiema. His announcement is unwelcome as it will complicate matters for us, Rono explained.
Rono disclosed that elders from the community will invite sang to a meeting, where they will prevail upon him to give up his ambition and back Kirwa, who unsuccessfully contested for the seat in the last elections on a New Ford Kenya party ticket.
