Sydney – An unknown driver deliberately ran over and killed 17 kangaroos on an Australian highway, officials said on Monday.
“It appears to have happened last night in a long stretch of road. Sixteen were found dead and we had to euthanize one,” said Michael Beatty, spokesperson for the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) in Queensland.
The incident took place between on Grindle Road on the outskirts of Brisbane, the capital of the north-eastern state of Queensland.
“The kangaroos were found within 150 yards (137 metres) of each other. They were mauled in a bad way. There was a big buck as well, but most were young roos,” Beatty told dpa over the phone.
“We are investigating the incident and have asked public for any information,” Beatty said.
Last October, police charged an 18-year-old Australian man for killing more than 100 grey kangaroos by running them down in his vehicle in New South Wales.
