Cop shot in Joburg stop-and-search operation

Johannesburg – A police officer who attempted to stop a vehicle during a stop-and-search operation in Carltonville, Johannesburg, was shot, police said on Monday.

The incident happened at around 23:00 on Sunday, said Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini after a police officer and his colleague stopped an Opel Astra sedan which was overloaded.

One of the suspects in the vehicle fired shots, Dlamini added, and an officer was hit in the stomach.

“Police returned fire and fatally shot one of the suspects and arrested five others,” said Dlamini. “One suspect managed to escape and police have launched a manhunt for him.”

A gun was found on the suspects and their vehicle was impounded.

The wounded officer was recovering in hospital.

The five arrested men were expected to appear in the Carlton Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
