CORD leader Raila Odinga will retire from active politics if he does not win the 2017 elections, he has told confidants.
The CORD leader will contest the Presidency in 2017, and fears that it will be his last chance to strike gold. This is for a number of reasons.
First, (Currently 71) he will be in his late seventies in the following election in 2022 which will raise questions for many Kenyans who will ask for younger folk to take over the country’s politics.
Secondly, the likes of Moses Wetang’ula and Ali Hassan Joho have already been set aside as likely Presidential candidates come 2022 and with William Ruto on the Jubilee side likely to be the candidate, Raila will be going up against a young outfit.
” Raila admits privately that it is likely his last chance. 2022 is a different case. It is far away and complex for many reasons.
” It will be tough to ask those who have supported him over 15 years without winning to once again play second and third fiddle. It will be tough,” the source added.
Whether the CORD leader will contest the 2017 polls is an issue of contention at the moment as CORD co Principal Kalonzo Musyoka says that a pre 2013 agreement stated that Raila would stand down for him in 2017 if he did not win the 2013 polls.
