4 Common Lies About Marriage

Nairobi – There are common misconceptions about marriage. Here are a few.

Marriage will change them

What marriage does is just solidify your union if you are actually serious about each other. What it does not do is make the other person change unless they want to for the better. People change because they want to not because you want them to. If they think you are worth it, they will. If they do not think so, then there is your answer.

It will make your relationship stronger

What makes marriage stronger is the two of you, not the certificate itself or a wedding or the elders. Marriage is only strong if the two of you fight for each other and to keep each other together. If it is not working now, take a step back and time from each other. You need it. If they do not fight for the relationship as you do, then marrying them will not change the situation.

You should always marry someone who is your best friend

Friendship is a good and important thing when you are committed to someone. Someone you can have fun with or laugh with is good but let’s be honest, some of us need someone who can knock (not literally) some sense into us because we have a tendency to go out of hand. What you need in marriage is someone you can rely on especially when you know your weaknesses and they can step in. You do not want kids to suffer from your bad decisions. Friendship is good but an adult is also important.

Look for your soul mate

Now this is a lie. I don’t know who came up with it but looking back and thinking an ex was your happy ever after is dooming yourself especially if they moved on. You broke up for a reason, keep it that way and avoid the grief.
