Harare – Taxidermists in Zimbabwe are preserving Cecil the lion and “preparing a full mount” of him, the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) said on Wednesday.

“Zimparks is currently working with taxidermists on preserving him and preparing a full mount of him,” the authority said in a tweet.

Cecil’s head was removed soon after he was killed in early July on an illegal hunt by US dentist Walter Palmer.

It was handed over to police by Theo Bronkhorst, the professional hunter who oversaw Cecil’s killing.

Elsewhere Cecil is to be immortalised as a Beanie Baby stuffed toy, US manufacturer Ty, Inc has announced.

It says the profits from the sale of the toy will go to WILDCRU, the team of Oxford researchers who had been monitoring Cecil before he was killed.

“Hopefully, this special Beanie Baby will raise awareness for animal conservation and give comfort to all saddened by the loss of Cecil,” said Ty Warner, the chairperson of Ty, Incorporation.
