A Ugandan couple who were at the brink of being kicked out by a church over its rules on how to hold a wedding have finally had the last laugh.
According to reports, Michael Aboneka – a lawyer and activist- who was set to wed Lydia Kobusinge, sued the Watoto Church over its “stringent” laws on marriage.
My wedding Uganda reports that Aboneka was not amused early this year after he was handed the conditions by the church that he was to meet before walking down the aisle with his bride.
The church reportedly demanded that he…
1. Present a letter of consent (blessing) from the parents of the bride-to-be.
2. A pastor’s endorsement of fitness for marriage.
3. Evidence of HIV status tested at one of the specified hospitals.
4. A counselling report issued by the respective hospital.
A matter that did not settle down with him and he subsequently wrote a petition challenging the rules.
Last Saturday, there was pomp and colour as the two exchanged vows in a posh ceremony at La Jolla gardens, Kisaasi-Bukoto, Kampala.
It is not clear if the church officiated the ceremony. The case has not been heard.
