Pietermaritzburg – Best friends Thelma and Louise, the large Boerboel and the smiley Dachshund, have found their “forever home” after their previous owners abandoned them on a Thornville farm.Pietermaritzburg SPCA spokesperson Lynne Jackson said the pair’s original owners had been living as tenants on a farm in Thornville and had left the two dogs behind with the owners of the farm when they moved.
“They told the owners that they would fetch Thelma and Louise once they had settled into their new home but they never came back.”
Jackson said the two are well over seven years old and inseparable, which made finding a home quite tricky.
“It was discovered that Thelma is quite deaf and that she relies on Louise not only for companionship, but to be her eyes and ears,” she said.
“The sweet and loving duo had to be kept together in the quarantine kennels at the SPCA because they were distressed when separated.”
She said Thelma “sang and Louise danced” whenever they were excited and this endearing quality, coupled with their story of abandonment, led the pair straight to Ashburton resident Rene Engelbrecht.
Engelbrecht said her daughter-in-law coaxed her into visiting the pair and once she met them she fell in love.
“They have settled in very well with us and our other two Boerboels and Yorkie. They really are best friends.”
Engelbrecht said the pair had made their way into the hearts of her family and she was happy she was able to give them a home so they could continue dancing and singing together.
