Tanzania’s Tourism Industry Has Eecovered, With a 37.2% Rise in Tourist Arrivals

Tanzania’s tourism industry is making an impressive rebound nearly four years after sales collapsed due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

According to latest figures from the Bank of Tanzania, tourism has made an amazing comeback, contributing $2.99 billion to foreign exchange earnings in July 2023, up from $1.95 billion in July 2022.

This indicates a 33% increase in service receipts, reaching $5.49 billion in July 2023, up from $4.12 billion in July 2022, according to the Bank of Tanzania.

The bank also stated that Tanzania’s service earnings have surpassed $5 billion for the first time in its history, thanks to a recovery in tourism and increasing gold earnings.

Tanzania’s tourist business generated roughly $2.52 billion in 2019, but by December 2020, earnings had plummeted to just $1 billion.

During this time, gold became the country’s principal foreign exchange earner, generating $2.958 billion in December 2020.

The tourist sector’s revival is highlighted by a 37.2% increase in international arrivals, totaling 1,658,043 visitors this year—an all-time high.

Tanzania’s previous high for tourism earnings was $2.5 billion, set in 2019 when the country welcomed 1,527,230 visitors.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Europe and the United States continue to be the largest sources of tourists visiting Tanzania for leisure and vacation.
