South African actress Thuso Mbedu is kitted out in Louis Vuitton on the cover of W Magazine.

Along with being the cover star for one of the American fashion magazine’s Pop & Fall Issues, the 30-year-old also has a spread styled in top fashion labels such as Burberry, Brunello Cucinelli, Dior and Gucci.

In the accompanying interview with Troy Patterson, Thuso talks about how she prepared for her role in The Underground Railroad, living in Los Angeles and her upcoming film.

The International Emmy nominee shared the cover and some images from the shot on Instagram with the caption: “Look at me looking like I know what’s going on. This was an absolutely amazing and unforgettable day! Was surrounded by great and talented people with gorgeous clothes!”

Thuso made history as the first South African to be cast in the leading role for an international series. In her preparation for the role of Cora, Thuso said she listened to audio recordings of emancipated slaves and revealed that their broken English made her relate to them as it reminded her of home.

“In rural South Africa, in certain parts of the townships, some people speak like that. In the recordings, I heard Africans, rather than just African-Americans. I also heard broken spirits, and that changed how I treated Cora.”

On how she has been adjusting to life in the City of Angels, Thuso, who lives in the Valley Village neighbourhood, said she is still settling.

The Is’thunzi actor also shared that she is currently preparing for The Woman King, her project with Viola Davis that will be filmed in South Africa.

“I want my fighting skills to be somewhere in the vicinity of my performance skills. With the performance, I do all the preparation, and then sort of stow it away and let it live in the moment. I want to get the fighting to a place where it would also come as naturally as possible.”
