Benedict Peloeole appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where his case was postponed to September 21.
Members of his family, as well as relatives of his late wife, attended the court case.
Peloeole indicated he still wanted to contact his private attorney.
Dressed in blue jeans and a brown jacket, he appeared composed as he stood in the dock.
It was unclear what led to him allegedly opening fire on his wife and daughter, instantly killing them at their home in Pretoria West on Saturday night.
His son and nephew, who were also in the house, escaped unharmed, Ipid spokesperson Grace Langa told reporters outside court.
At the time, the police said a neighbour heard gunshots and when he went to the house, he found the bodies of the officer’s wife and daughter lying in a pool of blood.
Langa said each had been shot twice in the upper body.
The officer handed himself over to the police following the incident. He faces two counts of murder.
