SONU Offices Set Ablaze As Students Protest Against Babu Owino Re-Election

Students at the University of Nairobi set ablaze the Students’ Organisation (SONU) offices Monday morning protesting the re-election of Babu Owino.

Over 300 students participated in the demo that stretched to Uhuru Highway and a section of State House road, claiming that Owino rigged the election.

The rioting students said Owino’s main challenger, Mike Jacobs, won the election that was held on Friday.

According to the election results, Owino garnered 18 000 votes against Jacobs’ 3 000, which the students claimed was rigged.

Owino, who has been at the helm of the SONU leadership since 2011, however dismissed the rigging claims saying he was fairly elected.

Standard reports that Owino has already been sworn in as the duly elected SONU chair.

The Star adds that the students pledged to carry on with demonstrations until Owino’s re-election is revoked, amid claims by the University administration that he validly and legally won.
