A woman was on Tuesday evening killed in a fatal accident involving a military truck and two lorries along the Thika Super Highway.
According to eyewitnesses, one of the lorries had stopped on the road due to a puncture when the speeding military vehicle approached the scene with another lorry following it closely.
The soldier driver tried to evade the stalled lorry but in the process was hit from behind by the other lorry.
“The soldier driving the military truck seemingly attempted to evade the stalled lorry but was in the process hit from behind by another lorry and ended up losing control, hitting the guard rails and overturning in the adjacent lane,” a local daily quoted.
A female passenger, who was on the military truck’s passenger seat and allegedly attached to the National Youth Service (NYS), died on the spot.
“The driver of the speeding lorry broke his legs while the soldier driving the military truck escaped unhurt and moved swiftly through the driver’s window to pull out his male colleague from the overturned truck.”
“We then rushed to lift the truck’s cabin in order to remove the female passenger who had sat in the middle seat but [we] found her head crushed. She had died on the spot.” an eyewitness stated.
The accident led to a traffic snarl-up of about three hours.
Early this year, Kenyans.co.ke published a report by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) indicating that Thika Superhighway was one of the most dangerous roads to use in Nairobi.
