Zimbabwe’s opposition, the Movement for Democratic Change led byMorgan Tsvangirai, has criticised government over the continued secrecy around President Robert Mugabe’s health, a report said on Wednesday.

According to NewsDay, the MDC’s national organising secretary, Abednico Bhebhe said that the continued secrecy around Mugabe’s health status was one of the factors that could easily lead the southern African country into civil unrest.

Bhebhe said that the ruling Zanu-PF government was doing Mugabe, 92, a “disfavour” in keeping his health status a secret to the citizens.

“Mugabe’s old age and health status are putting Zimbabwe towards civil unrest. There is surely no shame in admitting all is not well with Mugabe at his advanced age of 92 years,” Bhebhe was quoted as saying.

Bhebhe’s remarks came just a few days after an online news site reported that the veteran leader had died mid-air on his trip to Dubai.

Mugabe, however, over the weekend scoffed at the death rumours, as he jokingly said that he had been “resurrected”.

“Yes, I was dead. It’s true I was dead. I resurrected as I always do once I get back to my country. I am real again,”said Mugabe.

Mugabe’s health has been increasingly under the spotlight in recent years, particularly after he fell down a staircase after addressing supporters last year.
