The newly appointed Chief Justice David Maraga on Wednesday amazed many after he held prayers at the chambers of the Supreme Court before he started executing duties bestowed on him by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The session was led by the President of the Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA) East and Central Africa Region Dr Blasious Ruguri.

Just like in his interview where he confessed the strong stand he had in his Christian faith, CJ Maraga noted that prayers were essential.

“As a staunch Christian, I had purposed that before I begin to discharge my new duties as the CJ, I will pray and thank God for bringing me this far. I have come along with the leadership of the SDA church and I call upon Dr Ruguri to lead the prayer session,” the CJ said.

During his interview for the CJ position, Justice Maraga told the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) that he would never work on Saturday as it was his Sabbath day.

On Wednesday, President Kenyatta swore Maraga into office in a ceremony held at State House. The Head of State instructed Justice Maraga to ensure that the backlog of corruption cases at the judiciary was cleared immediately.

“Clear the more than 600 corruption cases pending in courts. Kenyans want to see cases concluded quickly,” Kenyatta stated.

The first assignment for Maraga was to swear in the nine members of the Panel that will recruit new commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The electoral body Select Panel is made up of a nine-member committee including five nominees from religious organisations and four from the Parliamentary Service Commission.
