Obama says the next generation of leaders will have to combine an appreciation of their own culture with the modern world. Obama says that future contrasts with the “terrible vision” embraced by the perpetrators of the attacks in Paris.

Obama is speaking to some 500 participants in the White House’s Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative. Obama noted his personal connection to the region. He lived in Indonesia as a child and his half-sister was born there. Obama says the Asia Pacific is “part of who I am and how I see the world”.

Kuala Lumpur is Obama’s last stop in nine-day trip to Turkey, the Philippines and Malaysia.
