Nigeria: ‘I Was Paying To Act In Films’ – Mr Macaroni Recounts Battle With Depression

Mr. Macaroni has recounted his battle with depression and how he found success in skit-making.

In a tweet on Saturday, the comedian said he became depressed after he was expelled from school in 2017.

He said he went through another phase of depression in 2019 while hustling for movie roles.

The skit maker said he was, at some point, paying filmmakers to land roles in their projects.

Macaroni, who wrote in both Pidgin and English, said this once caused him to fall victim to fraudsters.

“I was dealing with depression in late 2017/2018. That was the period I was expelled from Uni,” he wrote.

“And it was the 4th University at the time.

“From 2018-2019 was another round of depression.

“I continued hustling for roles again in Nollywood. I have been acting on and off since like 2011.

“From one audition to another. Dem scam me tire. I dey pay for form ontop say I wan act.”

Mr. Macaroni added that he started creating content in 2019 while struggling with depression.

“I started creating content and posting online in late 2019 when depression wan finish me. God picked my call the same year,” he added.

In 2009, Macaroni gained admission to Lead University, Ibadan where he was to study Law.

He was later forced to leave in his second year due to the university’s accreditation issues.

By 2011, he was again a Law student at Houdegbe North American University, Cotonou in Benin Republic.

Due to his campus activism, the would-be entertainer was forced to leave before earning his degree.

Upon leaving Cotonou, Macaroni decided not to continue his education, but to take his acting career seriously.

He took up a few acting roles in movies and sitcoms but was urged by his parents to complete his education.

Macaroni opted to study Theatre Arts and was admitted to Afe Babalola University, Ekiti.

However, similar misfortunes led to him not completing his education.

In 2013, Debo was admitted into the Redeemer’s University Nigeria, Osun state.

There, he finally earned a degree in Theatre Arts and Film Studies, graduating years later.

Macaroni, born Debo Adedayo, gained widespread prominence after his role in the End SARS protest of 2020.
