National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has backed CORD’s push for electoral reforms ahead of August 2017 polls to avoid possible post-election violence.
NCIC chairman Francis ole Kaparo told a parliamentary joint committee on National Cohesion and Equal Opportunity there should intensive public awareness on peace because Kenyans are easy to listen and react to incitement.
He warned of possible 2017 post-election skirmishes caused by incitement and mass action calls by aspirants who refuse to accept results.
“Our technical staff together with members of the National Police Service Commission, CID and the Office of the DPP must work around the clock from now up to the elections. There is need for more resources to be invested in monitoring and undertaking investigations in this regard,” he said.
Kaparo told the committee chaired by TNA chairman Johnson Sakaja that reforms are needed in IEBC to help in achieving cohesion because failure of the electoral electronic system and incomplete or missing voters’ names in electoral records may stir conflict.
He added that shortage of ballots and other critical election materials during the election period may also be a threat to national cohesion caused by disputing parties.
