Namibian President Hage Geingob died on Sunday while undergoing medical care, his office confirmed. He was 82.

In a tweet on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, the Namibian presidency stated that Geingob’s medical team at Lady Pohamba Hospital did all possible to help him, but he died with his wife, Monica Geingos, and children by his side.

Geingob was being treated for cancer.

The 82-year-old underwent a colonoscopy and a gastroscopy on January 8, followed by a biopsy, according to his office last month.

Namibia’s acting president, Angolo Mbumba, urged calm, stating in the same tweet that the “Cabinet will convene with immediate effect in order to make the necessary state arrangements in this regard.”

Geingob, the southern African nation’s president since 2015, was expected to complete his second and last term this year.

In 2014, he stated that he had survived prostate cancer.

Namibia is scheduled to hold elections for a new leader in November.
