Namibian President to Undergo Treatment After “Cancerous Cells” Found

Namibian President

Namibian President Hage Geingob will begin cancer treatment after normal medical examinations and a follow-up biopsy revealed the presence of malignant cells, his office confirmed.

According to the Namibian Presidency, the 82-year-old underwent a colonoscopy and gastroscopy on January 8, followed by a biopsy.

“On the advice of the medical team, President Geingob will undertake appropriate medical treatment to deal with the cancerous cells,” his office added.

Geingob, who has been president of the southern African country since 2015, is expected to continue to perform presidential duties alongside the Cabinet, of which he is the Chairperson.

In June 2023, he had an aortic procedure. He revealed in 2014, while still Prime Minister, that he had overcome prostate cancer.

The Presidential and National Assembly elections are set for the end of the year.

The presidency says “Dr. Hage G. Geingob has premised public office and effective governance on processes, systems and institutions that are geared towards transparency and accountability, including on matters pertaining to his health status”.
