A military coup has broken out in Burundi over the third term ambition of President Pierre Nkurunziza.
REUTERS reports that the coup was announced by Major General Godefroid Niyombare, a senior Burundi army officer.
Niyombare is quoted saying, ”Regarding President Nkurunziza’s arrogance and defiance of the international community which advised him to respect the constitution and Arusha peace agreement, the committee for the establishment of the national concord decide: President Nkurunziza is dismissed, his government is dismissed too”.
President Nkurunziza is currently in Tanzania meeting other East African leaders to discuss the crisis. His aide dismissed the coup claims as “a joke”.
