Meet Malenga Mulendema, Zambian Writer Behind Netflix’s First Ever Original African Animation Series

Netflix has officially launched its first original African animation series, “Supa Team 4.” Malenga Mulendema, a Zambian writer, created the show, which is part of Netflix’s Representation Matters Collection.

The series, formerly known as “Mama Ks Team 4,” is set in Zambia’s capital, Lusaka, and stars four covert teen superheroes recruited by a former spy. These youthful heroes use their abilities to battle crime while managing the difficulties of daily life and school.

Malenga expressed her commitment to bringing African representation to the global market, stating, “In creating a superhero show set in Lusaka, I hope to introduce the world to four strong African girls who save the day in their own fun and crazy way. Most importantly, I want to illustrate that anyone from anywhere can be a superhero,” according to CBS News.

Malenga came up with the idea for the series after winning a Triggerfish Animation Studios pan-African talent hunt in 2015. The series was picked up by Netflix in 2019. Netflix increased its activities on the continent earlier this year, following the popularity of other African-produced shows such as “Blood and Water.”

Malenga is overjoyed with this historic achievement and believes that the series will be well-received by global audiences. Sampa the Great composed the show’s theme song, emphasizing its value for young Zambians.

“I’m excited that the world finally gets to see the fantastic show that the incredibly talented super team, from Africa and beyond, have put together… We hope Supa Team 4… will lead to further investment and collaboration so we can continue to grow the industry,” she said.

“Supa Team 4” is now available for streaming on Netflix.
