“An unknown male was found lying in a pool of blood in the vicinity of People’s Park at around 20:00,” Colonel Jay Naicker told News24.
He said the perpetrators were unknown and no arrests were made.
Naicker could not immediately provide more information on the death.
East Coast Radio, one of the organisers of the event, said in a statement that it believed there was an assault at Durban Day.
“At the moment we have no confirmation of the incident. Police and emergency services are on the scene at People’s Park,” it said.
“We as organisers are deeply concerned and we are doing everything we can to establish the facts. We are working closely with authorities on this isolated incident.”
According to the music festival’s website, the Durban Day line-up included performances by AKA, Khuli Chana, Mafikizolo and Prime Circle.
