A man who was filmed whipping Nyeri Members of County Assembly (MCAs) at a function presided by Governor Nderitu Gachagua has been charged in court.

Alex Kariuki Kahumbi was charged with three counts of assault and creating disturbance.

In the first and second counts, he was charged that on May 30, this year, at Mbiriri trading center he assaulted Karatina Ward MCA Joel Gichuru Maina and also Iriaini-Mathira Ward MCA James Kariuki Muchiri causing them to have bodily harms.

In the third charge, he was accused of creating disturbance and causing a breach of peace by threatening to whip the MCAs.

Kahumbi however denied the charges while appearing before Nyeri senior resident magistrate Onesmus Towet.

“The governor was coming to open development projects at our Ward and we were all waiting for him peacefully until when a group of MCAs came and started disrupting us,”  Kahumbi told the court.

He asked the court to release him on free bond.

However, the prosecution led by State Counsel Allan Wanjohi, opposed the application saying that the charges he is facing are violent in nature.

“The law talks of reasonable terms and free bond cannot be allowed for these charges,” said Wanjohi.

The magistrate ordered that he be released on a bond of KES.50,000 or a cash bail of KES.25,000.

The case was slated to be mentioned on June 16 with a hearing of July 7, this year
