A Malawian national found himself in hot water after being arrested for ridiculing a man living with albinism, Nyasa Times reports.

The suspect, James Makina, allegedly referred to Julius Ngangula, an albino native, as “mobile money” while claiming that he would be “better off sold for easy money”.

Police in Lilongwe confirmed Makina’s arrest, stating that he had been charged with conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

In a related development, two women were also arrested following their mockery of a 13-year-old girl living with albinism in Lilongwe.

Boniface Massa, Executive Director of the Association of People living with Albinism in Malawi (APAM) has previously lamented the treatment of albino people living in the country, while claiming that many referred to them as “moving cash”.

“When we are moving in the streets, some Malawians are calling us ‘moving cash’ or ‘mobile money’, insinuating that if they could abduct us they could sell us very quickly,” Massa says.

Police officials have since warned Malawian citizens against inciting violence through inhumane threats towards albino nationals.
