Warrant Officer Phetole Moses Ramolefo was off duty at the time, Colonel Ronel Otto said.
He was still in uniform when he took his vehicle to a car wash at 19:00.
“While there, four unknown suspects wearing balaclavas in two vehicles hijacked the brand new Toyota bakkie of an employee of a nearby shop,” said Otto.
“The off-duty member went to assist but in the process was shot in the head.”
Fortunately the bullet grazed his forehead and he was not critically injured, she said.
The suspects robbed Ramolefo of his firearm and fled the scene.
No arrests have been made.
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Fannie Masemola visited the scene and Ramolefo in hospital.
He vowed that police would use all their resources to hunt down the suspects and make sure they were arrested.
